Sarnia Council Delivers Key Updates

Sarnia Council has recently made significant decisions affecting infrastructure, community services, and transportation in the city. Key updates emerged during the latest council meeting, highlighting various projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Sarnia Council Delivers Key Updates on Infrastructure Projects

Contract for George Street Reconstruction

Schouten Excavating Inc. has been awarded a contract worth $3.3 million. This project will focus on the reconstruction of George Street, specifically between Mackenzie Street and Russell Street. Enhancements will include new underground infrastructure, as well as a revamped road and sidewalk.

Noise By-Law Exemption for County of Lambton

The County of Lambton has received a noise by-law exemption for overnight asphalt resurfacing work. The areas affected include:

  • Indian Road from Kathleen Avenue to Exmouth Road
  • London Road from Superior Street to Montcalm Avenue

This work will take place over an eight-week period, starting from July 6 to October 30. However, the actual duration of the work is estimated to be around 30 days, contingent on weather conditions.

Bright’s Grove Library Renovation and Expansion

A contract totaling $5.4 million has been awarded to K&L Construction Ltd. for the renovation and expansion of the Bright’s Grove Library. Additionally, the city council allocated:

  • $280,000 for contingency costs
  • $131,066 for project management services through Winmar

Funding for Multi-Use Sports and Community Centre

The city will release $700,000 to Sarnia BACE for the construction of a multi-use sport and community centre. This facility will be located behind the Goodwill on Michigan Avenue. Conditional upon Ministry of Environment approval, the council also plans to reallocate $2.4 million in funds for development and permitting expenses.

On-Call Transportation Services Initiative

City Councillor Brian White successfully passed a motion to explore options for 24/7 accessible on-call transportation services. Current public transportation lacks coverage during overnight and early morning hours. This gap affects employment, healthcare access, and social participation. A report detailing potential options, costs, and timelines is expected within six months.

Formation of the Municipal Services Corporation

The recruitment process for the board of directors for the Municipal Services Corporation (MSC) is set to begin. This board will oversee Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport operations. The board will consist of four to six public members, along with one city council representative and one from the economic development department. The MSC will be established as a not-for-profit entity. However, Councillors Terry Burrell and Bill Dennis expressed opposition to this move.

These updates reflect Sarnia Council’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure, expanding community facilities, and enhancing transportation options for all residents.
