Taipei Issues Heatwave Alert: Stay Indoors, Use Sun Protection

Taipei is currently facing extreme heat conditions, prompting an official alert from the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). The CWB has issued an orange light warning, forecasting temperatures that could reach as high as 38 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave Alert in Taipei: Stay Indoors and Protect Yourself
On May 26, 2026, the Taipei City Government responded to this extreme weather by issuing the city’s first heatwave notification of the year. Residents are encouraged to remain indoors in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces to avoid heat-related issues.
Preventive Measures Implemented
In response to the rising temperatures, the Taipei City Environmental Protection Bureau has announced a series of measures:
- Water spraying on roadways to reduce ambient temperatures.
- Increased irrigation efforts for public parks.
- Outdoor labor inspections to ensure worker safety.
- Social services aimed at supporting elderly residents living alone.
- Schools are advised to reinforce education on heat hazards and adjust outdoor activities accordingly.
- Fire services are ramping up emergency medical readiness.
The Environmental Protection Bureau emphasized that Taipei’s geographical characteristics contribute to the heat, particularly its dense urban structures which create a heat island effect. As such, residents are urged to stay inside as much as possible, wear sun protection, and stay hydrated if they must go outdoors.
Government Initiatives and Future Plans
During a session at the city council, Taipei Mayor Jiang Wan-an stressed the importance of ensuring worker safety during heat events. Starting June 1, the Labor Bureau will launch special inspections to enforce workplace protections for outdoor workers.
Additionally, the mayor has proposed five demonstration sites around the city to install shading facilities. These would provide refuge for pedestrians waiting at traffic lights, helping to minimize sun exposure during peak heat hours. Planning for this initiative is actively underway, with hopes to start installations by mid-year.
Residents are reminded to continue monitoring the weather and stay informed about health recommendations during this heatwave to protect themselves and their families.
