Authorities in Halifax are investigating a tragic case involving the death of an infant. Two individuals, Sukhpreet Singh (23) and Ramandeep Kaur (26), have been charged with concealing the body of a child and indignity to human remains. The couple also faces charges of resisting a peace officer and obstruction of justice.

The Crown has indicated the possibility of additional serious charges as the investigation progresses. Reporting from Crown prosecutor Paul Carver reveals that the mother of the deceased newborn is currently in critical condition and unresponsive in a hospital.

Timeline of Events

The case began unfolding on May 22, when emergency services responded to a 911 call at around 9:40 PM. The call reported a woman, believed to have just given birth, in a life-threatening condition at her apartment on Willett Street.

Upon her arrival at the hospital, the newborn was still missing, prompting an extensive search in the area. Initially, four individuals known to the woman were taken into custody for questioning, with Singh and Kaur later charged.

Discovery of the Newborn’s Remains

  • May 24: Police discover remains of the newborn in a wooded area off Old Coach Road, approximately 10 kilometers from the initial search site.

During the investigation, officers learned of a second location where the remains could be discovered. As this development unfolded, the search was redirected based on new information obtained by the police.

An autopsy is yet to be conducted, which will determine the cause of death and whether the baby was born alive. The continued investigation may lead to further charges depending on the evidence collected.
