Michail Antonio Criticizes Graham Potter for West Ham’s Relegation, Citing Culture Misunderstanding

Former West Ham forward Michail Antonio has publicly criticized Graham Potter’s management, attributing the club’s relegation to a misunderstanding of its culture. Antonio, who departed West Ham in June 2025 after a serious car accident, provided insights into what he believes contributed to the team’s decline.

Antonio’s Perspective on West Ham’s Relegation

In an interview with The i Paper, Antonio pointed out that Potter’s approach disrupted the team dynamics. He stated, “Graham Potter came in and tried to change too much.” According to him, understanding a club’s culture is crucial for any manager, and he felt Potter failed to do this effectively.

Impact of Leadership Changes

  • Potter eliminated several veteran players, including Antonio, Lukasz Fabianski, and Aaron Cresswell.
  • He also let go of Edson Alvarez, a prominent figure in the Mexican national team.

Antonio emphasized that the removal of experienced voices led to a lack of leadership within the squad. He criticized Potter for subsequently complaining about the team’s leadership issues, stating, “How can you say you’ve got no leaders if you get rid of all the leaders?”

Potter’s Dismissal

After a challenging tenure, Potter was sacked in late September 2025. Under his management, West Ham won only six out of 25 matches. His replacement, Nuno Espirito Santo, failed to improve the club’s fortunes further.

Frustration and Reflection

Antonio expressed regret regarding his previous anger about the situation. “If they get relegated, it’s the only way the club’s going to feel it,” he noted, emphasizing the need for accountability. However, he also expressed a desire for the club to succeed now that he has moved past his earlier frustrations.

Relationships and Contract Negotiations

Antonio also reflected on his difficult exit from West Ham and strained relations with vice-chairman Karren Brady. He recounted how contractual negotiations became strained following his accident, describing an initial supportive relationship that turned “ruthless.” He was offered a contract with a weekly wage of £5,000 and no clear opportunity to return to the first team. When he raised concerns about the contract, Brady responded, saying, “They haven’t broken their leg in a massive car crash. We don’t know what the outcome is going to be.”

New Beginnings in Qatar

Currently, Antonio plays for Al-Sailiya in Qatar. His transition to the Middle East has been marked by challenges, including regional conflicts that affected his first days in the country. Describing his experience, Antonio recalled, “I was looking out my window and seeing fire from the rockets going past my hotel window.” Despite the unsettling start, he stated, “But other than that, it was fine.”
