Western Leaders to Convene in Alberta Amid Separatism Concerns

Leaders from Western Canada and the northern territories are set to meet in Alberta to discuss critical issues such as trade and regional relations, amid rising separatism concerns. The annual conference of western premiers will occur in Kananaskis, just west of Calgary, on October 16 and 17.
Focus of the Conference
This year’s conference will cover various topics, including:
- Trade
- Economic development
- Energy security
- Defense
- Nation-building projects
According to Sam Blackett, a spokesperson for Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, the conference aims to enhance western partnerships to realize the West’s full economic potential.
Separatism Debate in Alberta
Alberta’s political climate is tense due to discussions of separatism. Premier Smith recently announced a referendum scheduled for October 19. This vote will ask Albertans whether they wish to remain part of Canada or seek a future binding referendum on separation.
Commentary from Other Leaders
British Columbia Premier David Eby described the situation as ironic, noting he is meeting with Canadian leaders in a province considering leaving the nation. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew expressed his commitment to Canada, emphasizing the importance of nation-building and hoping for unity among the premiers.
National Projects and Cooperation
Prime Minister Mark Carney has played a pivotal role in recent nation-building projects. He declared a bitumen pipeline to the West Coast a matter of national interest, aligning with Alberta’s goals while easing carbon pricing for the province. Eby, however, has contested this project, advocating for similar levels of investment for British Columbia’s initiatives.
Attendance and Participation
In addition to Smith and Eby, other participants include the premiers from Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, and Yukon, while Nunavut Premier John Main will attend virtually due to legislative commitments. He has expressed interest in topics related to Arctic security, especially as federal spending on security increases.
Future Prospects
Despite disagreements, there are signs of camaraderie. Smith has indicated her intent to give Eby cowboy boots as a gesture of goodwill. This conference will serve as an important venue for discussing the future of the West and addressing separatism concerns among the leaders.
