This contributed to a 0.151-second deficit compared to polesitter George Russell of Mercedes, as experienced by McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, acknowledged the mixed implications of the chosen gear ratios. He elaborated on their potential to enhance performance in some situations while also presenting challenges in others. “There are definitely pros and cons with the ratios,” Stella stated, affirming their inclination towards shorter gear ratios compared to Mercedes.

As the 2026 season progresses, forward gear ratios are fixed once chosen at the season’s start. However, the current regulations permit changes, essentially offering a ‘joker’ option for adjusting ratios and final drive. Despite this flexibility, Stella confirmed that McLaren has no immediate plans to alter its gear ratios, expressing satisfaction with their current setup:

“At the moment, we are happy with where we are. We are not considering to review our availability, even though the regulations would allow you to do so.”
