Bovis Exits Crystal Palace Stadium Expansion Project

Bovis has exited the Crystal Palace Stadium expansion project, which aims to enhance Selhurst Park’s capacity significantly. The firm had been engaged under a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) since the summer of 2024, but reportedly ceased involvement several months ago. The company has not provided comments regarding its withdrawal.

Change in Contractors for Crystal Palace

Alongside Bovis, Morrisroe, previously responsible for design, demolition, and structural work, has also stepped back from the project. Recently, Morrisroe announced plans to build a new stand for Europa League champions Aston Villa.

Procurement Strategy Shift

Crystal Palace FC has revised its procurement strategy related to the redevelopment. The ongoing expansion intends to increase Selhurst Park’s capacity by 8,000, bringing the total to 34,000 seats. This project is estimated to cost over £150 million.

Progress on the Selhurst Park Development

In its latest project update, the club confirmed the acquisition of six homes near the stadium. These properties are set to be demolished to help build the southeastern corner of the new stand. The club indicated that enabling works have progressed well and promised a further update on the project’s next steps.

  • Last Update Date: January 2024
  • Previous Update Date: December 2024
  • Current Planned Capacity: 34,000 seats
  • Project Value: At least £150 million
  • Completion Year of Acquisition: 2024

In its December 2024 update, Crystal Palace stated that the main stand’s development was nearing its final planning phase. Ongoing negotiations with contractors were highlighted, with construction slated to commence after the conclusion of the 2024/25 football season.

Approval and Technical Teams

The proposed design, crafted by KSS Architects, received approval from Croydon Council in 2022. Key players in the project also include cost consultant Core 5 and structural engineer Mott MacDonald. Despite the changes, Crystal Palace has yet to announce a new main contractor following Bovis’s exit.

Comparative Projects

Meanwhile, McLaren is engaged in developing a new 16,000-seat stadium for Oxford United. This stadium, approved last summer, will be the UK’s first all-electric venue and feature additional facilities, including a hotel, conference center, gym, health center, and sports bar.
