Windsor Mayor Challenges US Over Gordie Howe Bridge Delay

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has voiced strong concerns regarding the delays in opening the Gordie Howe International Bridge. This essential infrastructure project remains mired in a dispute between the United States and Canada.
Political Dispute Over Bridge Delay
Dilkens stated that the U.S. government proposed a plan to the Canadian government to facilitate the bridge’s opening. However, he urged officials not to accept any unfavorable deals. “If it’s a bad deal, don’t take it,” Dilkens said, emphasizing that residents prefer delays over poor agreements.
Impact of Leadership on Trade
Negotiations regarding the bridge have stalled for months. Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump threatened to keep the bridge closed unless the U.S. received “full compensation” from Canada. Dilkens criticized this stance, labeling it “asinine” to let the bridge remain closed over perceived grievances.
Significance of the Gordie Howe Bridge
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which began construction in 2018, is expected to be a pivotal piece of infrastructure supporting U.S.-Canada trade. Currently, approximately one-third of trade between these two nations passes through Detroit, predominantly via the Ambassador Bridge.
- The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest international border crossing in North America.
- It is nearly 100 years old and operates as a four-lane toll bridge.
Dilkens pointed out that while the Ambassador Bridge can manage trade for now, the region greatly needs the Gordie Howe Bridge operational due to trade impacts from recent tariffs.
The Bridge’s Progress and Future
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is funded by Canada and has shown steady progress, with residents eagerly following its development. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority confirmed that preparations for the bridge’s opening are underway, including tests of the lighting system.
The agency anticipates a spring opening, but the precise date is contingent upon passing final reviews and testing. They promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Sandy K. Baruah, president of the Detroit Regional Chamber, emphasized the bridge’s importance, noting that it symbolizes the robust relationship between Detroit and Canada and enhances U.S.-Canada trade.
Local officials have yet to respond to inquiries about the situation from El-Balad, including offices from the U.S. Trade Representative and Michigan’s government.
