Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Forecasted for GTA This Weekend

Environment Canada has warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds affecting the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this weekend. Residents should prepare for a soggy end to their week as significant weather changes are expected, with rainfall totals between 30 and 50 millimeters across southern Ontario.
Weather Warnings Issued
On Saturday afternoon, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for several regions, including:
- Toronto
- Burlington – Oakville
- Hamilton
- Halton Hills – Milton
- Mississauga – Brampton
- Niagara Falls – Welland – Southern Niagara Region
- Pickering – Oshawa – Southern Durham Region
- St. Catharines – Grimsby – Northern Niagara Region
- Vaughan – Richmond Hill – Markham
Impact of the ‘Memorial Day’ Storm
A system referred to as the “Memorial Day” storm is responsible for the adverse weather, originating from the United States. Rainfall began in southwestern Ontario early Saturday morning, reaching Toronto around 7 a.m. and persisting throughout the day.
Forecast for the Weekend
According to climatologist Dave Phillips, the worst weather will occur on Saturday. Rain is predicted to diminish to drizzle by noon on Sunday, with possible heavier bursts returning that evening. He notes that winds will exacerbate conditions, causing rain to blow horizontally, adding discomfort for residents.
Temperature and Conditions
Toronto’s expected high for the day is only 13°C, significantly below the usual average of 21°C for this time of year. Phillips describes the conditions as “cloudy, cool, wet, and windy,” characterizing it as a difficult weekend for outdoor activities.
Looking Ahead to Summer
Despite the damp and chilly spring, Phillips is optimistic about the summer forecast. He predicts that June, July, and August will bring warmer than usual temperatures across Canada. Residents can expect a significant shift to persistent heat and humidity after a challenging spring season.
