Wayne Gretzky Autographed Card Sets Record with $540K Sale

An autographed 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card has made headlines after selling for a staggering $540,000 in the recent Fanatics Collect May Premier Auction. This sale marks the highest amount ever paid for an autographed hockey card.
Record-Breaking Sale
The Gretzky card, which received a grade of nine and a perfect 10 for the autograph by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), fetched this remarkable price including the buyer’s premium. It exemplifies the immense value of Gretzky’s rookie cards, which continue to capture the attention of collectors and investors alike.
Previous High-Value Sales
While this Gretzky card stands out, it is not the first time that O-Pee-Chee rookie cards have commanded high prices. Four other graded 10 copies of the same card sold for prices ranging from:
- $720,000
- $1.2 million
- $1.29 million
- $3.75 million
However, these versions were unsigned, making the autographed card a unique collector’s item.
Expert Insights
Kevin Lenane, vice president of Fanatics Collect, commented on the rarity of the autographed Gretzky card, stating he had never encountered another like it in his extensive experience with vintage collectibles.
Lenane highlighted Gretzky’s unparalleled achievements in hockey, noting, “He had more career assists than anyone else had points.” He emphasized the extraordinary value and significance of Gretzky in the sport, suggesting such iconic performances are unlikely to be replicated.
Fanatics Collect’s Success
The recent auction was part of a record-breaking month for Fanatics Collect, which has seen sales exceed $100 million. Notable sales in the same auction included:
- Josh Allen’s 1-of-1 numbered 2025 Topps Chrome Honors MVP card for $1.35 million
- An autographed LeBron James superfractor from 2025 Topps Chrome, which sold for $1.26 million
The sale of the Allen card shattered the previous record for a card featuring the Buffalo Bills quarterback, which was $288,000. This highlights the growing market for high-value sports cards, particularly for star players.
Collecting memorabilia and trading cards continues to be a lucrative market, attracting both dedicated collectors and new investors keen on making significant financial gains.
