ITV Saturday Event at Haydock Delayed Due to Track Surface Hole

Saturday’s ITV event at Haydock faced delays due to concerns over track safety. A hole was discovered in the track, prompting an immediate inspection. This major meeting featured crucial Royal Ascot trials: the Temple and Sandy Lane Stakes.

Incident Overview

The opening race, the Listed Hedge Of Oak Stakes, showcased the highly favored Friendly Soul, trained by John and Thady Gosden. Despite being sidelined since October 2024, the mare was competitive in the race. However, she took a false step during a challenging moment and was subsequently pulled up by champion jockey Oisin Murphy.

Inspection and Findings

Friendly Soul managed to walk back without requiring veterinary assistance. Following the incident, officials, including trainer John Gosden and jockey Duran Fentiman, inspected the problematic area of the track. They discovered that the ground in that specific spot was significantly compromised.

  • The stick used during inspection penetrated deeper than other areas of the track.
  • A groundsman demonstrated the severity of the hole, pushing his arm into it up to the elbow.

This issue mirrored a similar incident at Cheltenham earlier in the year, raising concerns over the track’s integrity.

Officials’ Response

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) stewards called for an inspection, leading to the decision that the track was unsafe for racing. Clerk of the course Dan Cooper emphasized the urgency of the situation, detailing the drainage problem that led to the misstep by Friendly Soul.

Future Races and Inner Course Assessment

As the inquiry continued, staff evaluated the possibility of using Haydock’s inner course for subsequent races. However, this would limit them to only straight races, such as the Temple and Sandy Lane Stakes, while races requiring bends were abandoned.

  • Inspection of the inner track will determine its suitability for racing.
  • Over 150 horses had been on the surface in the previous two days, raising further concerns.

Cooper noted the logistical challenges of preparing the inner track, stating that sufficient staff resources were unavailable to ensure safe racing conditions on curvy sections.
