Basque Police Confront Global Sumud Flotilla Activists at Bilbao Airport

Six members of the Global Sumud Flotilla faced confrontation at Bilbao Airport due to the actions of the Basque police, the Ertzaintza. The incident occurred when the activists attempted to pose for media coverage, blocking an arrival door. This led to police intervention as tensions escalated.

Details of the Confrontation

As the situation intensified, the Ertzaintza intervened, resulting in clashes with both the activists and supporters who breached security lines. The altercations resulted in the detention of four individuals: two members of the flotilla and two supporters. Charges included serious disobedience, resistance, and assault against authority.

Investigation Launched

The Basque Security Department has initiated a probe through the Internal Affairs unit of the Ertzaintza. This inquiry aims to determine if the police response adhered to existing protocols during the incident.

The activists were originally scheduled to return a day earlier but postponed their travel due to hospital admissions for two members. These two individuals sustained injuries while being captured by Israeli forces en route to Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Arrival in Barcelona

Meanwhile, a larger group of around twenty activists from the flotilla arrived at Barcelona Airport around noon on Saturday. This arrival took place five days after their capture during the same humanitarian mission to Gaza.

  • Activists were welcomed by approximately 200 supporters.
  • Supporters carried Palestinian flags and banners to show solidarity.
  • Notable political figures, including Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun and Euro MP Jaume Asens, were present.

The situation highlights the complexities surrounding humanitarian efforts, as activists continue to push for support while facing significant obstacles.
