Intense Heat Expected to Surge in UK Over Bank Holiday Weekend

Intense heat is expected to surge in the UK this upcoming Bank Holiday weekend. Forecasters anticipate the first heatwaves of 2026 will likely be declared by Sunday. Several regions, including London, the south-east, and Cardiff, are expected to see temperatures rise above the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days.
Temperatures Expected to Rise
In the south Midlands and south-east England, temperatures could reach as high as 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Such high temperatures are relatively uncommon for May. The UK Met Office defines days exceeding 30C as “very hot,” which were once a rarity.
Historical Context
Over the last decade, the occurrence of “very hot” days has increased significantly. In fact, the number of these hot days has more than tripled compared to the historical average from 1961 to 1990. In 2012, the last recorded day hitting 30C in May occurred.
Weather Across the Regions
Meanwhile, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland will experience a different weather pattern. Cloud cover will dissipate, allowing for some sunshine. Although temperatures will not be as high, clearer skies are expected to be welcomed.
