Lyme Disease Cases Hit Record High in Montreal

In 2025, Lyme disease cases in Montreal reached an unprecedented level, with 161 reported instances. This marks the highest number recorded in 23 years, coinciding with the disease’s classification as a reportable illness, according to the Montreal regional public health authorities.
Demographics and Risk Factors
The data reveals that individuals over 50 are notably more affected by this tick-borne bacterial infection. However, children aged 0 to 14 account for 14% of the reported cases, with 22 instances observed.
- 76% of cases reported outdoor recreational activities as a primary risk factor.
- 39% (24 out of 61 cases) engaged in gardening or land maintenance activities.
- Only 14% of infected individuals reported seeing a tick on their skin.
Geographic Insights
The public health report indicates that 73% of those infected contracted Lyme disease within Quebec, particularly in Montreal. Lionel Berthoux, an infectious disease specialist from the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières, emphasized the significance of this trend. He pointed out that residents cannot ignore the risks associated with Lyme disease, especially if they engage in gardening or visit wooded areas.
Symptoms and Hospitalizations
While no fatalities have been linked to the infections, nine individuals experienced severe symptoms that led to hospitalization. Common symptoms include:
- Swelling
- Joint pain
- Heart palpitations
- Facial paralysis
Out of the hospitalizations, five cases were related to cardiac symptoms, while two involved neurological issues. The Montreal area has been categorized as a “high-risk zone” for Lyme disease.
Service Insights from Other Regions
In Quebec, the Eastern Townships remains the most impacted area, reporting 385 cases out of a total of 689 in the province for 2025.
Protective Measures
To mitigate risks, Dr. Camille Guillot, a public health advisor specializing in zoonoses, advocates for awareness. She insists that the benefits of outdoor activities outweigh the risks associated with tick-borne diseases. Proper protective measures include:
- Using approved insect repellents
- Wearing long pants with the hems tucked into socks
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed about Lyme disease prevention methods.
