De’Aaron Fox (ankle) Misses Spurs’ Game 2 Against Thunder

San Antonio Spurs starting guard De’Aaron Fox is sidelined for the second straight game due to a right high ankle sprain. Fox’s injury occurred during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The injury happened when Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu landed on Fox’s ankle while diving for a loose ball, though he managed to continue playing until the end of that game.
Despite his efforts to recover, Fox sat out the first game of the Western Conference finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday, and on Wednesday night, he was unable to participate again. The Spurs had been optimistic about his return but ultimately determined that his ankle was still an issue after a pregame workout.
Game-Time Decisions Ahead
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson stated that Fox’s status for future games will depend on game-time decisions. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Fox’s ability to play as the series progresses.
“It’ll be pretty status quo moving forward, I believe, regardless of if he plays in games or not,” Johnson explained.
Fox’s Performance Prior to Injury
- Fox has been a crucial player for the Spurs, averaging 18.8 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in the playoffs.
- During the regular season, his averages were 18.6 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds.
- Before this injury, he hadn’t missed a game since March 25, starting in 72 games throughout the regular season.
Spurs’ Record Without Fox
The Spurs have performed well in Fox’s absence, holding an 8-3 record this season without him. In his place, rookie Dylan Harper has stepped up as a starter.
Dylan Harper Shines in Game 1
- Harper scored 24 points and recorded 11 rebounds, six assists, and a playoff record of seven steals in the Game 1 victory against the Thunder.
- At just 20 years old, he is one of the youngest players in this year’s playoffs, having turned 20 on March 2.
Harper’s performance has been remarkable for a rookie. Coach Johnson praised his ability to embrace his role and contribute to the team’s success, demonstrating poise that is unusual for players of his age.
“For him to be able to do that and grow as a winning team player while showcasing his talent is hard to do,” Johnson added.
As the Spurs navigate the playoffs, the uncertainty around De’Aaron Fox’s condition will continue to shape their strategy moving forward.
