Poland Among Most Disrupted Gas Suppliers: Report

A recent report has identified Poland as one of the most disrupted gas suppliers in Europe, particularly regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar. A blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which began in March, is impacting the transport of Qatari LNG. According to the Institute for Energy Economics (IEEFA), Poland is projected to spend over €2 billion on U.S. LNG by 2025.
Poland’s Growing Dependency on U.S. LNG
The report highlights that Europe as a whole is increasing its reliance on U.S. energy. Analysts predict that by 2028, the United States will supply approximately 80% of Europe’s LNG imports. Poland reportedly sources more than half of its oil from the U.S. This shift in dependence comes after a significant rise in prices following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
EU Commitments and Future Projections
As part of a trade agreement between the U.S. and the European Union, the EU committed to purchasing U.S. energy worth $750 billion over the next three years. IEEFA warns that this extensive purchasing could lead to a new dependency on a single supplier, echoing past reliance on Russian pipeline gas.
Renewable Energy Alternatives
IEEFA emphasizes that an equivalent investment in renewable energy sources could facilitate the installation of around 546 gigawatts of wind and solar power across Europe. This shift could reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and offer more sustainable energy solutions.
Current Import Dynamics in the EU
The report also observed a surge in LNG imports from Russia during the first quarter of this year, reaching the highest levels since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Specifically, imports increased by 16% year-on-year, totaling 6.9 billion cubic meters. The largest consumers of this LNG were France, Spain, and Belgium.
Import Breakdown
| Country | Percentage of LNG Imports |
|---|---|
| United States | 59% |
| Russia | 18% |
| Qatar | 6% |
| Nigeria | 6% |
| Norway | 4% |
| Algeria | 3% |
| Trinidad and Tobago | 1% |
This data underscores the complexities and challenges within the European gas supply landscape. Poland’s position and the broader European energy strategy will continue to evolve as market dynamics shift and geopolitical factors come into play.
