Turkey Boosts Kazakh Grain Imports

Turkey is set to enhance its imports of Kazakh grain following a collaborative agreement between Turkish and Kazakh leaders. This arrangement emerged during recent discussions in Astana between Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Strengthening Agricultural Trade Between Turkey and Kazakhstan

Both nations are committed to strengthening their agricultural trade. A joint roadmap will soon be adopted, focusing on increasing exports of Kazakhstan’s grain crops to Turkey. This initiative aims to boost bilateral trade between the two countries.

Investment in Agricultural Infrastructure

Several significant investment projects are underway to enhance agricultural cooperation. Turkish company Tiryaki Agro plans to establish a deep grain-processing plant in Astana. This facility, valued at $320 million, will have an annual processing capacity of:

  • 240,000 tons of wheat
  • 80,000 tons of peas

Additionally, Alarko Holding is poised to invest $650 million in a greenhouse complex in Shymkent, further expanding agricultural capabilities.

Modern Agricultural Technologies and Logistics

Kazakhstan has shown interest in fostering cooperation with Turkey regarding modern agricultural technologies. Both countries have also agreed to enhance logistics routes, specifically through the Middle Corridor across the Caspian Sea. This route is increasingly recognized as a modern iteration of the ancient Silk Road, connecting Central Asia with the Mediterranean.

The potential of these projects marks a significant step towards a mutually beneficial relationship that could see an increase in grain imports to Turkey.
