Wrexham Nurse Runs Chester Half Marathon for Wales Air Ambulance

An ITU nurse from Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Hayley Whitehead-Wright, is gearing up for the Chester Half Marathon this weekend. She aims to raise vital funds for the Wales Air Ambulance and support this lifesaving service. At 39 years old, Hayley started her running journey in 2025 to enhance her well-being and effectively unwind after long work shifts.
Training for the Chester Half Marathon
Despite not considering herself a natural runner, Hayley has committed to months of training. She describes her preparation as “brutal,” but remains focused and optimistic about completing the race on May 17. Hayley shared her experiences through social media, stating, “You’d be surprised how many people shout out to me about my size or how slow I am when I am out and about,” but she emphasizes that her focus is on feeling great while running.
Role at Wales Air Ambulance
- Hayley has served as a Patient Liaison Nurse with Wales Air Ambulance for four years.
- She balances this role with her ITU nurse duties at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
- Her work involves supporting patients and families after traumatic events.
Reflecting on her running journey, Hayley notes that it all began with a desire to improve her health. She set a goal to transition from couch to 5K, eventually completing events like the Wrexham 10K. Preparing for the Chester Half Marathon marks her most significant challenge yet, requiring an increase in training duration from one hour to three hours.
Community Support
Throughout her training, Hayley has faced mental challenges and questioned her ability to complete the half-marathon. She sought reassurance from the Chester Half Marathon Facebook group, where she found encouragement and connection with fellow runners. Two women reached out to her, and they agreed to support each other during the race.
This weekend, Hayley views the half-marathon as a personal milestone, emphasizing distance over speed. “I am slow and not an athlete, but I will do what I can, when I can,” she remarked. Her insights aim to inspire others, particularly those struggling with fitness, to start moving outdoors.
Fundraising Importance
Debra Sima, the Regional Fundraising Manager for Wales Air Ambulance, praised Hayley, calling her an “incredible role model.” She acknowledged the hard work and dedication Hayley has shown in her preparation to raise funds for the charity. “Every pound raised makes a lifesaving difference,” Sima noted, expressing deep appreciation for Hayley’s efforts.
As the Chester Half Marathon approaches, Hayley Whitehead-Wright remains steadfast in her commitment to both her fitness journey and fundraising goals, determined to make a positive impact for the Wales Air Ambulance.
