Chad Severs Ties with Wildlife Charity Associated with Prince Harry

Chad has officially severed ties with African Parks, a wildlife charity associated with Prince Harry. This decision comes after the Chadian government criticized the organization for its insufficient investment in local wildlife conservation.

Background on African Parks and Chad’s Wildlife Conservation

African Parks, established in 2000, is dedicated to protecting national parks across Africa. With management over 22 parks in 12 countries, it covers over 20 million hectares of protected land. The organization aims to ensure these areas are ecologically, socially, and financially sustainable.

The two notable reserves previously managed by African Parks in Chad are:

  • Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve
  • Greater Zakouma Ecosystem, including Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia National Parks

Chad’s Government Announcement

On a recent Monday, Chad’s Environment Minister, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, delivered an official letter announcing the government’s unilateral decision to end their collaboration with African Parks. The ministry highlighted that the resurgence of poaching in national parks is a direct result of the charity’s lack of investment.

Scandals Impacting African Parks

This decision adds to the growing controversies surrounding African Parks. Earlier this year, the organization faced scrutiny for failing to address reports of abuse by its employees in a park located in the Republic of Congo. Additionally, it has resisted publishing an independent report related to these incidents.

Prince Harry has been involved with African Parks since 2016 and was appointed to the board of directors in 2023, after serving as president for six years. His affiliation with the charity aligns with his commitment to wildlife conservation and humanitarian efforts.

Financial Backing and Supporters

African Parks has garnered support from several high-profile donors, which include:

  • The European Union
  • Rob Walton, heir to Walmart
  • Howard Buffett, son of Warren Buffett

In its 2023 annual report, the charity revealed it received more than $500,000 (£375,000) annually from its funders.

Impact on Prince Harry’s Charitable Work

The Chadian government’s decision poses a significant setback for Prince Harry’s charitable endeavors. Earlier this year, he also stepped down from Sentebale, an organization he founded to assist children orphaned by AIDS in Botswana and Lesotho. His resignation followed a widely publicized conflict with the charity’s board chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka.

This recent development emphasizes the ongoing challenges within wildlife conservation efforts in Chad and the broader implications for organizations operating in areas burdened by poverty and conflict.
