South Carolina State Fair Opens Wednesday, Prioritizing Safety and Tradition

The 156th South Carolina State Fair opens Wednesday at noon, with preparations ongoing at the Columbia fairgrounds. This year’s theme, “Harvesting Happiness,” reflects the fair’s commitment to celebrating both tradition and community. Crews are diligently setting up rides and vendor booths, ensuring everything is ready for the influx of visitors.

Safety First: Inspections and Security Measures

As part of its commitment to attendee safety, the fair has implemented rigorous inspections for all attractions. This year, the fair showcases 50 rides, all undergoing a comprehensive safety inspection process. Lynda Franc, North America’s corporate marketing director, confirmed that inspections occur daily. The process includes assessments by ride operators, ride supervisors, and both employed and third-party safety inspectors.

Support from Local Authorities

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) will be on-site to assist with fair security. Cpl. John Ferrell from the RCSD Emergency Management Unit emphasized the importance of keeping children safe. In the event of a child getting separated from their parents, adults should seek assistance from a nearby deputy, who will help coordinate a quick reunion.

Visitor Guidelines and Expectations

  • The fair operates for a limited 12 days each year.
  • A clear bag policy is enforced, with diaper bags and medical equipment being exceptions.
  • Expect hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the event.

General manager Nancy Smith expressed her excitement for opening day, stating, “It’s a real sense of satisfaction that you’re bringing something to South Carolina.” The fair promises to be a blend of tradition, family fun, and educational experiences, underscoring its significance in the community.
