Severe flooding in the Rose Park neighborhood has prompted official warnings from Salt Lake County leaders. Residents experienced devastating water accumulation just two days ago. Homeowners are now cleaning up after the storm caused substantial damage.

Heavy rains severely impacted the area, leading to overflowing storm drains and flooded homes. Hanh Ly, a Rose Park resident, remarked, “The water is all the way to our knees and all our childhood memories, everything’s gone.”

Flood Control Measures and Challenges
According to Kade Moncur, Director of the Salt Lake County Flood Control Division, the recent rainfall concentrated heavily over Rose Park, resulting in an extraordinary situation. Four out of five pumps were required to operate manually during the flooding.
Moncur explained, “We started receiving calls around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday regarding rising water levels. Our team arrived within 20 minutes.” The county has two electric pumps that activate immediately, while diesel pumps require more time to engage. The fifth pump is solely for parts.
Functionality of the Drainage System
The drainage system in place was not designed to handle the sheer volume of water experienced during this event. Moncur noted that the geography of the Rose Park area, with its minimal slope, exacerbates flooding risk. Additionally, while updates to the older pumps are planned, they worked as intended during the storm.
Understanding the Impact
This flooding was particularly devastating, with Moncur stating that the storm drains struggled akin to a bathtub draining too slowly. “There was so much rain that the system couldn’t cope,” he said. The Rose Park Westpointe area has a history of flooding, and this incident was notably severe.
Moncur acknowledged, “I wish we could prevent flooding, but that is just not possible.” He insisted that without the pumps, residents would have faced an even more prolonged and severe flooding situation.
