Sony’s New Digital-Only PS5 in Europe: Less Storage, Same Price

Sony has recently unveiled a revised digital-only model of the PS5 in Europe. This new version features reduced storage capacity but maintains the same price point as its predecessor.

Sony’s Revised Digital-Only PS5 Details

This updated digital PS5 model was reported to have decreased its storage from 1TB to 825GB. Despite the cut, the model is priced at €499, which means consumers will pay the same amount even with less storage.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Storage Reduction: The usable SSD storage is now 667.2GB, down from 848.0GB in the previous model, reflecting a 27% reduction in capacity.
  • Design Update: The console sports a matte finish for both its black casing and white sleeves, eliminating glossy surfaces that attract fingerprints.
  • Weight Change: The new model weighs 100 grams less than the previous slim version and 1.3 kilograms lighter than the original launch model.
  • Internal Adjustments: The fan is lighter, and the motherboard has been redesigned to be thinner while maintaining power and performance.

Pricing Trends

Earlier this year, Sony increased the price of the digital edition in the UK and mainland Europe from £390/€450 to £430/€500. This was the second increase since the model’s launch, which originally retailed at £359.99/€399.99.

Market Implications

The price hike indicates that Sony is navigating a difficult economic landscape. All versions of the PS5 have seen rising costs in the US market as well. However, it remains uncertain whether the new storage-reduced model will be available in the US.

In summary, while the revised digital-only PS5 offers some design enhancements, the decrease in storage and unchanged pricing may leave consumers considering their options.
