Severe Snowstorm Alert: Prepare for 10 Inches and Hazardous Conditions

A late-season winter storm is set to impact the northern Rockies, bringing hazardous conditions and significant snowfall. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for certain areas in Montana and winter weather advisories for parts of Wyoming.

Key Weather Alerts

  • Winter Storm Warnings: Issued for parts of Montana due to severe snowfall and strong winds.
  • Winter Weather Advisories: Alerted in portions of Wyoming, indicating conditions that may disrupt travel.

Montana Details

The most severe impacts are anticipated in north-central Montana. The NWS in Great Falls reports that hazardous conditions may continue into Saturday. A winter storm warning is in effect for the Bears Paw Mountains and southern Blaine County until noon MDT Saturday.

  • Snow Accumulation: Expected totals of 1 to 3 inches in the mountains, with lower amounts at elevations.
  • Wind Gusts: Winds could reach up to 35 mph, potentially blowing falling snow and reducing visibility.

NWS officials caution outdoor enthusiasts to prepare for dangerous conditions, especially in exposed or elevated areas. Difficult driving conditions are also anticipated due to slush or snow-covered roadways.

Wyoming Precipitation

To the south, a winter weather advisory has been issued for the Sierra Madre and Snowy ranges in Wyoming. This advisory will be active from Saturday evening through early Monday, with expected snowfall ranging from 6 to 10 inches, and higher amounts possible near the peaks.

Travelers, particularly hunters and hikers, are warned to use caution due to the possibility of disorientation in poor visibility conditions.

Freeze Warnings and Additional Hazards

In addition to snowfall, freeze warnings are active across the Northern Rockies and inland Northwest, affecting areas in Idaho, Utah, Montana, Washington, and Oregon. Sub-freezing temperatures, dipping into the teens and low 20s, could have detrimental effects on sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing.

  • Freeze Duration: Some locations may experience multiple nights of freezing temperatures extending into early next week.

Residents are advised to take precautionary steps to protect plants, pipes, and irrigation systems as colder air settles over the region.
