Ottawa Approves Enbridge’s $4B Expansion of Sunrise Gas Pipeline Project

The Canadian government has granted approval for Enbridge Inc.’s significant $4 billion expansion of the Sunrise Gas Pipeline Project, as confirmed by Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson.

Details of the Sunrise Gas Pipeline Expansion

This project aims to enhance the capacity of the existing Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia (B.C.). The expansion will involve the addition of approximately 139 kilometres of new pipeline. This will be achieved through the construction of 11 looping segments that run parallel to the current line.

Impact on Natural Gas Capacity

The expansion is projected to boost the transportation capacity by up to 300 million cubic feet per day. This increase is crucial for meeting B.C.’s growing natural gas demand, especially as new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities, such as Woodfibre LNG, are set to commence operations.

Construction Timeline

Construction for the Sunrise Gas Pipeline Expansion is anticipated to commence during the summer season. This timely development is expected to play a pivotal role in securing B.C.’s natural gas supply.

  • Project Name: Sunrise Gas Pipeline Expansion
  • Total Investment: $4 billion
  • New Pipeline Length: 139 kilometres
  • New Capacity: 300 million cubic feet per day
  • Construction Start: Summer 2023

As the energy landscape evolves, initiatives like the Sunrise project are essential for bolstering infrastructure and meeting energy needs in British Columbia.
