Joshua Kutryk’s Role in Expedition 75
Expedition 75 will feature a diverse crew, including NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, alongside Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. Kutryk expressed his excitement, stating, “I am honoured to be a part of Crew-13 and represent Canada on this mission.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration in space exploration, describing it as a combination of curiosity, adventure, innovation, and science.
Background and Training
Joshua Kutryk, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, began his journey with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 2017. His previous experience includes serving as a fighter pilot and operational test pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Since his recruitment, he has undergone extensive training in Houston with NASA.
Challenges with Starliner
Initially, Kutryk was slated to travel to the ISS using Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner capsule. However, the spacecraft has encountered significant technical difficulties. Key issues included:
- A failed uncrewed test in December 2019 due to thruster misfires.
- A successful test docking in May 2022.
- Problems during a crewed flight test in June 2024, which left two astronauts stationed on the ISS while the capsule returned to Earth.
As a result of these setbacks, Boeing’s Starliner program has experienced delays, prompting the reorganization of crew missions to ensure timely launches.
Upcoming Launch Schedule
The newly announced crew, including Joshua Kutryk, is set to launch in mid-September. This mission marks a significant milestone for Canadian representation in space exploration.
