Fréchette Reshuffles Cabinet: Bonnardel In, Guilbault Out

In a significant cabinet reshuffle, Christine Fréchette has appointed François Bonnardel as the new Minister of Immigration and Parliamentary Leader. This marks a notable return for Bonnardel, who was previously removed from the cabinet by François Legault.

Key Changes in the Cabinet

The reshuffle, announced just ahead of a cabinet unveiling, sees several prominent figures retaining their positions. Eric Girard will continue as Minister of Finance, France-Élaine Duranceau remains at the Treasury, Sonia Bélanger stays in Health, and Sonia LeBel will oversee Education, despite her intent to exit politics after this term.

  • New Appointments:
    • François Bonnardel: Minister of Immigration and Parliamentary Leader
    • Samuel Poulin: Minister of Municipal Affairs
    • Benoit Charette: Minister of Transportation
    • Kariane Bourassa: Minister of Sports
    • Karine Boivin-Roy: Minister of Housing
  • Notable Exits:
    • Geneviève Guilbault: Former Minister of Municipal Affairs
    • Jonatan Julien: Former Minister of Transportation

Coalition Avenir Québec Dynamics

Despite a past rivalry with Fréchette during the leadership race, Bernard Drainville will take on the Ministry of Economy and Energy. Jean Boulet will remain in Labor and gain additional responsibilities, while Simon Jolin-Barrette continues as Minister of Justice, albeit without the portfolio for Canadian Relations.

Both Lionel Carmant and Gilles Bélanger will also see changes, with Carmant anticipated to manage Social Services and Bélanger departing from the cabinet. This reshuffle reflects strategic decisions aimed at balancing gender representation within the cabinet, as Fréchette aims for 40% to 60% female members.

Local Representation

Fréchette also plans to enhance regional representation by appointing ministers from previously underrepresented areas. Daniel Bernard will be a delegated minister in the economy, while Catherine Blouin joins as Minister of Family.

Focus on Commitment

Fréchette’s cabinet, consisting of 29 ministers, intends to maintain a balance of experience and innovation while avoiding the inclusion of unelected officials. Notably, the former head of Desjardins, Guy Cormier, declined a cabinet position offered by Fréchette.

This reshuffle showcases the evolving dynamics within the Coalition Avenir Québec as it prepares for upcoming political challenges, while signaling Fréchette’s strong commitment to governance and party unity.
