FIFA Heavily Sanctions Referee After Morocco-Senegal Match

FIFA has imposed substantial sanctions on referee Jean-Jacques Ndala following the controversial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal on January 19. This comes in light of the appeal decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Senegal of their continental title due to incidents that occurred during the match.

FIFA’s Decision on Ndala

On February 13, FIFA announced that Ndala would not officiate at the upcoming World Cup, alongside a list of seven African referees selected for the tournament. While Ndala maintained the trust of CAF, evidenced by his assignments in the African Champions League and CAF Cup, FIFA’s ruling signifies a significant blow to his officiating career.

Controversial Performance

Ndala’s conduct during the AFCON final faced harsh criticism. Many observers highlighted questionable decisions and a lack of assertiveness in managing the match. Reports indicated that instructions were given to him during a stoppage in play, specifically not to penalize Senegalese players who had already received yellow cards.

CAF’s Position

Despite the criticisms, CAF continues to support Ndala’s officiating duties. The organization has reiterated its confidence in his abilities. Olivier Safari, the CAF referees’ committee president, emphasized the importance of match integrity, which influenced their guidance to Ndala during the game’s critical phases.

Selected African Referees for the World Cup

  • Jalal Jayed (Morocco)
  • Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria)
  • Pierre Atcho (Gabon)
  • Dahane Beida (Mauritania)
  • Tom Abongile (South Africa)
  • Amin Mohamed (Egypt)
  • Omar Artan (Somalia)

The decision from FIFA, following the turmoil of the AFCON final, raises questions about the future of officiating in African football. The ongoing scrutiny of decisions made by referees could lead to further developments in how matches are officiated across the continent.
