Zub Sidelined for Senators in Game 2 Due to Undisclosed Injury
Artem Zub was unable to participate in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Carolina Hurricanes due to an undisclosed injury. The game took place at Lenovo Center on Monday, following Zub’s early exit during Game 1.
Zub’s Injury Impact on Senators
In Game 1, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for Ottawa, Zub left the ice early in the second period after sustaining the injury while checking Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis. The Senators’ coach, Travis Green, acknowledged Zub’s absence, stating, “It’s a big loss when he goes out. Someone’s got to step up to play those minutes against the top lines.” Zub is a key defenseman, having played an average of 20:48 minutes in 81 regular-season games and accumulating a career-high of 30 points.
Senators Adjust Roster
Following Zub’s injury, Lassi Thomson was brought into the lineup. Thomson was previously scratched in Game 1, during which he recorded three assists and a plus-3 rating in 11 regular-season games. He is now paired with Dennis Gilbert on the third defense line. Nikolas Matinpalo moved up to the first pair alongside Jake Sanderson, who logged 27:25 minutes in Game 1, the highest on the team.
- Artem Zub: Played 7:44 in Game 1 before injury.
- Lassi Thomson: Three assists, plus-3 rating in the regular season.
- Nikolas Matinpalo: Took rushes with Sanderson, played 17:08 in Game 1.
The Senators have experienced a significant number of injuries this season, utilizing 13 different defensemen throughout the regular season. Green remarked that this situation exceeded his past coaching experiences. Sanderson added, “Obviously, our pairs have been jumbled up a bit (because of injuries).” He noted the team’s strong camaraderie among the defensemen, which plays a crucial role in adapting to these changes.
The Senators will need to adjust their gameplay strategy as they navigate the playoffs without Zub, who has proven to be an integral part of their defensive lineup.
