Majority of Conservative Voters Prefer Poilievre to Lead in Next Election
Recent polling indicates that a significant majority of Conservative voters favor Pierre Poilievre as their leader for the upcoming election. However, there is a notable increase in the number of supporters indicating the need for a leadership change.
Poll Results Highlight Voter Preferences
According to a new survey by the Angus Reid Institute, 57% of past Conservative voters support Poilievre’s continued leadership. This metric reflects a slight decline from previous approval ratings.
- 57% of Conservative voters want Poilievre to remain leader.
- 30% would prefer a change before the next election, an increase from 18% in August.
Shifts in Public Sentiment
The survey presents a mixed outlook for Poilievre. While 75% of Conservative voters hold a favorable opinion of him, this figure has decreased from 88% in June 2025. The shift in sentiment coincides with notable political events, including Marilyn Gladu’s departure to join Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals.
Among demographic groups, Poilievre is particularly popular with men aged 35 to 54. However, only 30% of women across all age brackets view him positively, with 50% expressing a strong unfavorable opinion.
Comparative Views on Liberal Leadership
In contrast to Poilievre’s ratings, Prime Minister Mark Carney enjoys a 59% approval rating among Canadians. The poll reveals that perspectives on Carney’s majority government are mixed:
- 44% believe the Liberal majority promotes stability.
- 42% argue it misrepresents the electorate’s choices from the last election.
Impact of Rebranding Efforts
Despite efforts by Poilievre to rebrand and reach a wider audience—such as appearances on prominent platforms like the Joe Rogan Experience—these strategies have yet to significantly boost his approval ratings.
Spokesperson Sam Lilly underscored Poilievre’s previous support, highlighting that he received 87.4% approval during a recent event in Calgary. Lilly pointed out the achievements of Poilievre’s leadership in advocating against certain Liberal policies, including the carbon tax.
Survey Methodology
The Angus Reid survey was conducted online from April 15 to 17, engaging 1,646 Canadian adults. The findings provide a snapshot of the political landscape as Canada approaches the next federal election, revealing both opportunities and challenges for Poilievre’s leadership.
