Green Party Unveils Local Election Manifesto: Free Buses, Improved Waste Management

The Green Party has unveiled its local election manifesto, setting ambitious goals for the Swindon community. This initiative comes as the party prepares to contest 38 seats in the upcoming elections. The launch of the manifesto took place on Friday, April 17, with a clear call for change from the stagnation of the traditional two-party system.

Key Policies of the Green Party Manifesto

The manifesto outlines several key policies focused on enhancing local services and improving community welfare. The party emphasizes initiatives related to waste management and public transportation.

Waste Management Initiatives

  • Introduction of “pot-luck days” at the Cheney Manor Industrial Estate recycling center.
  • Implementation of “car-only days” to manage waste more effectively.
  • Improved bulky waste home collection services for large items like furniture.
  • Enhanced reporting and enforcement against fly-tipping.
  • Promotion of repair cafes and a “too good to waste” scheme to reduce landfill.

Public Transport Enhancements

The Green Party plans to improve public transport as a cornerstone of their election strategy. The manifesto outlines the following commitments:

  • Better bus links to underserved areas and improved cycle paths.
  • Utilization of existing infrastructure for electric scooters.
  • Design of a “Re-cycling” scheme to refurbish bicycles.

Moreover, the manifesto advocates for a council-owned bus service, aiming to prioritize community benefit over profit. The party has committed to exploring free bus travel for young people as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public transportation.

Housing and Social Care

The manifesto also addresses vital areas such as housing and social care. Key proposals include:

  • Development of more social housing that is affordable for local residents.
  • Focus on energy-efficient designs for new homes built on brownfield sites.
  • Exploration of alternative solutions to prevent children from entering foster care.

The Green Party emphasizes a community-centric approach, advocating for local solutions to support children at risk of entering private residential care outside Swindon.

Election Context

The upcoming May elections will see a total of 239 candidates vying for seats. In addition to the 38 Green Party candidates, Swindon will also host 57 candidates each from Labour and the Conservatives, along with 25 from the Liberal Democrats and five from the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition. The Green Party aims to change the status quo and bring fresh perspectives to council governance.

With their comprehensive manifesto, the Green Party of Swindon positions itself as a choice for progressive change in the local political landscape.
