Australian Police Uncover $10 Million Theft Ring, Arrest 31 Including Indian National

An extensive investigation by Victoria police has led to the dismantling of a significant theft ring in Australia. This operation is reportedly linked to a retail theft network valued at approximately $10 million. In total, 31 individuals have been arrested, including an Indian national who was residing in the country on an expired visa.
Details of the Theft Network
The accused group is alleged to have orchestrated a sophisticated “theft-to-order” scheme. This network targeted supermarkets throughout Victoria, specifically stealing high-value everyday items. The stolen goods included:
- Baby formula
- Vitamins
- Skincare products
- Electric toothbrushes
These items were subsequently transferred to receivers and resold in the black market, generating substantial profit. Locations affected included major cities such as Melbourne, Ballarat, and Geelong.
Arrests and Charges
Among those arrested is a 39-year-old Indian national, who faces serious charges. He is accused of stealing around $160,000 worth of merchandise over several months. The police have charged him with:
- 68 counts of theft
- 19 counts of attempted theft
This individual has yet to appear in court, while 18 others connected to the investigation have already been jailed. An additional 10 cases are currently pending in the courts.
Ongoing Investigations
The investigation is part of a larger crackdown on retail crime, identified as one of the fastest-growing types of crime in Victoria. Police have seen a marked increase in retail theft incidents over the past year. The operation follows previous initiatives, including Operation Supernova, which aimed to dismantle similar crime networks.
Authorities have noted that some theft groups have enlisted international students on temporary visas. In response to the escalating crime, police efforts have intensified under Operation Pulse, which has resulted in over 1,000 arrests related to retail theft and associated offenses.
As the investigation continues, further actions against those involved in the theft network remain a possibility. Victoria Police are committed to addressing the rising trend of retail theft through ongoing enforcement and community cooperation.
