On Saturday, a significant protest unfolded at the Ridglan Farms beagle breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Approximately 1,000 animal welfare activists attempted to enter the site but were met with a substantial police presence. Law enforcement responded with rubber bullets and pepper spray, leading to the arrest of several individuals, including the group’s leader.
Recent Protest Details
This protest marks the second attempt by activists to liberate beagles from the facility in two months. The Ridglan Farms, located about 25 miles southwest of Madison, houses around 2,000 beagles, according to local reports.
Police Response
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett stated that between 300 and 400 protesters were “violently trying to break into the property.” The sheriff’s department indicated that the crowd had ignored designated protest areas and blocked access for emergency vehicles. Barrett emphasized, “This is not a peaceful protest.”
Arrests and Aggressive Tactics
While the sheriff’s department did not confirm an exact arrest total, they noted that a “significant” number of individuals were detained during the confrontation. Police set up barricades, including manure-filled trenches, hay bales, and barbed-wire fencing, to protect the facility. Although some protesters managed to breach the fence, they were ultimately unsuccessful in entering the facility.
Activist Reactions
Julie Vrzeski, an activist, expressed feelings of defeat after hours of unsuccessful attempts to seize any dogs. The Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs had originally planned their operation for Sunday but chose to act one day earlier. Following the initial confrontation, activists moved their demonstration to the jail in downtown Madison, advocating for their detained leader, Wayne Hsiung.
Previous Incidents and Legal Actions
This protest is not the first of its kind, as activists broke into Ridglan Farms in March and successfully took 30 dogs, leading to 27 arrests for trespassing and related charges. Ridglan Farms has consistently denied allegations of animal abuse and cruelty. However, the facility agreed earlier this month to surrender its state breeding license effective July 1 to avoid prosecution.
Facility’s Continued Defense
Ridglan Farms maintains there is “no credible evidence of animal abuse, cruelty, mistreatment or neglect” associated with their operations. Despite ongoing controversies, the facility remains firm in its stance against the accusations posed by animal rights activists.
