Canada’s GST Top-Up Arrives in June, Grocery Benefit Follows in July

The Canadian government has introduced significant financial support measures to aid families and individuals facing rising costs. These adjustments will be implemented in two phases, with the GST top-up starting in June and the new grocery benefit commencing in July.
Key Financial Support Details
Announced earlier this year, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and a one-time GST top-up aim to alleviate financial pressure on Canadians. During an announcement, Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted these measures as crucial for assisting low- and modest-income families.
GST Top-Up Arrives in June
The one-time GST top-up will be distributed on June 5. This increase is intended to support individuals and families through the upcoming year, providing immediate financial relief.
- Families of four will see their benefits rise from $1,100 to $1,890.
- Single individuals will receive an increased benefit from $540 to $950.
Wayne Long, secretary of state for the Canada Revenue Agency, emphasized that this one-time payment aims to help those most in need and relieve affordability pressures.
New Grocery Benefit Starts in July
Starting in July, the GST rebate will be renamed the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. This quarterly payment will now feature a 25% increase, continuing for five years, aiding families in budgeting for essential needs.
- Families of four can expect an annual benefit of approximately $1,400.
- Individuals may receive about $700 each year.
This revised benefit structure seeks to ease the financial burden and is set to reflect on bank statements from July onward.
Eligibility for Support
To qualify for these benefits, applicants must be Canadian residents for tax purposes and at least 19 years old. For the 2024 tax year, the eligibility requirements are as follows:
- A single person must have an adjusted net income of $56,181 or less.
- A couple with two children must have a family income of $66,841 or less.
Currently, it is estimated that around 12 million Canadians benefit from the GST rebate, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.
