Plymouth’s Basement Cinema Thrills with Spine-Chilling Movies

Plymouth has a thriving film scene that includes various cinemas, but one unique venue stands out. The Eek! Film Club, located in a basement beneath Wilful Beer on Mutley Plain, offers a thrilling cinematic experience focused on horror and thriller genres. Since launching in April 2023, the club has hosted screenings for over 30 spine-tingling films.

Eek! Film Club: A Unique Movie Experience

The club meets regularly, specifically on the second Wednesday and Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM. With a cozy capacity of 35 seats, it provides an intimate setting for attendees to enjoy their favorite scary movies. The Eek! Film Club was initially popular when the venue was operated by Bulletproof Tap Haus, and the new owners of Wilful Beer were eager to maintain the club’s tradition.

Background of the Club

Eleanor Tomas, the founder of Eek! Film Club, created the initiative to combat the isolation many felt during the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally from Plymouth, Eleanor graduated from the University of the West of England in 2017 and later worked as a junior designer in Exeter.

Upon returning to Plymouth, she sought ways to connect with others and harnessed her organizational and design skills to start the film club. Her goal was to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where residents could watch films, enjoy drinks, and foster new friendships.

Innovative Features and Upcoming Events

The Eek! Film Club encourages local creativity through its unique movie poster commissions for each film screening. Every month, artists are invited to design posters, resulting in diverse styles that enhance the overall experience.

The monthly screenings continue with an exciting lineup, including:

  • June: From Dusk Till Dawn
  • July: Saw
  • August: It Follows
  • September: Aliens
  • October: Special mystery film for Halloween
  • November: Cabin In The Woods
  • December: Audience-selected film

Tickets are priced at £9, which includes a free A5 poster and popcorn. Club members can benefit from a loyalty scheme that rewards frequent viewers with a complimentary screening after ten visits.

Supporting Local Artists

The club emphasizes supporting local creatives by showcasing their work at an annual art show. Set for May 14, the event will display the 12 posters created over the previous year and provide an opportunity for attendees to purchase larger prints.

The Eek! Film Club is more than just a place to watch spine-chilling movies; it’s a community hub fostering connections through shared cinematic experiences. For more information, visit El-Balad.
