Ukraine has intensified its military actions against Russia, striking two oil refineries deep within Russian territory. The attacks took place over the weekend and targeted significant facilities that play crucial roles in Russia’s energy production.
Ukrainian Drone Strikes
On Saturday morning, Ukraine launched drone strikes on the Novokuybyshevsk refinery located in Samara Oblast. This facility is vital to Russia’s energy infrastructure, processing 8.8 million tonnes of crude oil each year. It produces over 20 types of commercial products that support Russian military operations.
Footage shared on social media showed large fires igniting at the refinery, with local residents reporting blasts heard across eastern and northern parts of the city. Shortly after the first strike, a second drone hit the Syzran refinery in the same region.
Syzran Refinery Under Siege
The Syzran facility is critical for Russia’s domestic market and export infrastructure. It serves as a hub for transporting oil through river logistics networks and the external shipment points, specifically the Novorossiysk port. Videos from the scene captured flames near storage tanks containing both crude oil and finished petroleum products.
Additionally, a separate drone attack targeted an industrial site in Tikhoretsk, Krasnodar Krai, igniting another significant fire. Over 200 firefighters were deployed to control this blaze, illustrating the widespread impact of these assaults.
Russia’s Response to Drone Attacks
In retaliation, Russia unleashed a massive drone campaign against Ukraine. On the evening of April 17, Russian forces launched 219 drones targeting multiple Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian air defenses were highly effective, destroying or disabling 190 of these drones, including advanced Shahed munitions.
Despite the defensive efforts, 28 drones managed to hit 17 locations within Ukraine. Debris from downed UAVs was reported at an additional nine sites, showcasing the extent of the conflict and the capabilities of both nations’ military operations.
Impact of US Sanctions
Amid these developments, the U.S. announced a month-long sanctions waiver on Friday, permitting the sale of Russian oil and petroleum products currently at sea. This decision, made by the Treasury Department, aims to alleviate global supply pressures stemming from geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflicts involving Iran.
This waiver extends previous measures that had recently expired, allowing for the purchase of oil loaded onto vessels as of the announcement. The move is a part of broader efforts to stabilize energy prices, which have been affected by international conflicts.
