Jean Todt Reveals Why Senna Almost Joined Ferrari in ’94

Jean Todt recently shared insights about the possibility of Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna joining Scuderia Ferrari in 1994. During an interview on the High Performance YouTube channel, Todt recalled a pivotal moment from September 1993 that could have changed the landscape of the sport.

Ayrton Senna’s Interest in Joining Ferrari

On that night in Monza, Senna visited Todt at the Villa d’Este hotel to discuss a potential move to Ferrari. Senna expressed a strong desire to join the team, indicating he wanted to make the switch in 1994. However, Ferrari already had contracts with drivers Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi for that season.

Senna’s Conflict

Senna, who was grappling with his future at McLaren, faced intense pressure from both his team and personal life. His friends, including Prof. Sid Watkins and his then-girlfriend Adriane Galisteu, advised him to consider retirement or a break. Despite the lure of Ferrari, he felt a deep connection to McLaren.

  • Senna’s last year at McLaren (1994).
  • Contracts with Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi at Ferrari.
  • Pressure from friends to retire or take a sabbatical.

Ferrari’s Position

Todt recounted that he informed Senna that Ferrari could not accommodate him for 1994. He emphasized the importance of contracts, to which Senna reportedly replied, “In Formula 1, contracts are not important.” Todt’s insistence on honoring existing agreements ultimately prevented Senna’s move that year.

Despite that setback, Todt acknowledged that Ferrari had a strong interest in Senna. They envisioned bringing him on board for the 1995 season, as the team was still recovering from years of underperformance.

The Outcome

Eventually, Senna signed with Williams after not being able to reach a deal with Ferrari. This decision significantly influenced future events in Formula 1 history. Meanwhile, Ferrari focused on rebuilding its team, with the ambition to secure a star driver in subsequent years.

  • Senna joined Williams instead of Ferrari.
  • Ferrari began a rebuilding phase post-1994.
  • Michael Schumacher joined Ferrari in 1997.

Todt’s reflections highlight how close Senna came to be part of Ferrari’s legacy, which later evolved into one of the most successful eras in Formula 1 history under his leadership and alongside Schumacher.
