Severe Storms Sweep Southern Regions; Jeju Mountains May See 100mm Rainfall
On the 17th of the month, southern regions of Korea, particularly the areas south of Chungcheong, are experiencing significant rainfall. This weather pattern follows several days of clear skies, resulting in lower day-time temperatures.
Severe Storms Impact Southern Regions
Rainfall began in Jeju and parts of the South Jeolla coast early in the morning, and it is expected to move further into the southern areas. Although rain in the Chungcheong region is anticipated to cease by nighttime, other southern areas will likely witness continued rainfall until the following morning.
Forecasted Rainfall Amounts
- Jeju: 30 to 80 mm, excluding northern areas.
- Mountain regions: Up to 100 mm or more.
- Southeast Gwangju, South Jeolla, and western South Gyeongsang: 20 to 60 mm.
- Busan, Ulsan, and central and eastern South Gyeongsang: 10 to 40 mm.
While Chungcheong is expected to receive less rainfall compared to other areas, the southern coasts should remain vigilant. Wind gusts may exceed 55 km/h, particularly around Jeju and the southern coastline, leading to a lower perceived temperature.
Temperature and Weather Conditions
As of 8 am, temperatures in major cities ranged from low 11 degrees to mid 16 degrees Celsius. The forecast predicts daytime highs between 16 and 21 degrees. Although daytime temperatures are expected to remain consistent with seasonal averages, a significant rise is anticipated after the rain clears, with highs reaching 28 degrees on Saturday and 29 degrees on Sunday.
Marine Safety Advisory
High tides may occur due to lunar gravitational effects, particularly along the Jeju coastline, leading to elevated wave activity. Winds are predicted to blow at speeds of 30 to 60 km/h, generating waves between 1.5 and 3.5 meters. This phenomenon is expected to be more prominent in the eastern sea of the South Coast and the southern offshore waters of Jeju, necessitating caution for maritime activities.
