‘Yellowstone’ Star Luke Grimes Explores Outlaw Country Rebellion Against Pastor Father

Luke Grimes, renowned for his role as Kayce Dutton in the hit series “Yellowstone” and its spinoff “Marshals,” reflects on his musical journey shaped largely by his upbringing. In a recent interview, he shared insights into the contrasting musical influences he faced growing up with a pastor father.

Outlaw Country Music: A Forbidden Genre

Grimes recalls a childhood where outlaw country music was not embraced at home. He describes his father, a pastor, as having strict rules regarding music. Grimes said, “Outlaw wasn’t allowed in my home.” Instead, family music time was limited to oldies and Elvis Presley. He explained that music, particularly secular songs, were permitted only during boys’ hunting trips.

Musical Heritage and Early Influences

Despite these limitations, Grimes found solace in country music. He grew up in Dayton, Ohio, where country music thrived. Grimes began playing the drums at the age of 11, inspired by classic artists like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson.

Transitioning from Acting to Music

At 18, Grimes moved to New York City to pursue a dual career in music and acting. After achieving fame in “Yellowstone,” he felt compelled to reignite his passion for music. He stated, “I thought, I’m going to take a swing at this.”

New Music and Personal Expression

Grimes acknowledges the challenges of transitioning between acting and music. He emphasized the importance of connecting with audiences, saying, “The biggest challenge with any art form is making things that you’re proud of.” His latest album, “Red Bird,” showcases his personal journey and artistic vulnerability.

Musical Ambitions and Future Goals

As he ventures further into music, Grimes hopes to bridge his two passions. He aims to overcome any perceptions that might limit his acceptance in the music scene. He reflected, “As a musician, you have to open yourself up and say, ‘This is who I really am.’”

With “Red Bird” now available, Luke Grimes continues to explore his musical roots while navigating the complexities of dual careers in acting and music.
