Environment Canada Alerts GTA Drivers: Water Pooling and Low Visibility Risks

Residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been alerted by Environment Canada regarding severe weather conditions expected to impact driving. The warnings include risks associated with water pooling and low visibility due to dense fog and heavy rainfall.
Weather Warnings Issued
On Wednesday, Environment Canada issued a yellow advisory for fog, warning that some areas near Lake Ontario may experience near-zero visibility. The fog is anticipated to lift by the afternoon, but other weather concerns persist.
Expected Rainfall and Flood Risks
- Up to 20 millimeters of rainfall is predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.
- The ground’s saturation levels mean limited capacity to absorb incoming rain.
- Pooling water on roads and in low-lying areas is likely, posing additional risks for drivers.
Environment Canada noted that some locations might experience higher rainfall amounts, further complicating conditions across the region. A special weather statement has been issued in conjunction with the fog advisory, highlighting the potential for flooding.
Impact on Local Areas
The warnings affect various parts of the GTA, including Halton, Toronto, and Oshawa. Drivers are strongly advised to exercise caution. Deteriorating visibility and the risk of water pooling could make driving hazardous.
Flood Outlook Extended
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has also extended its flood outlook. It warns that flooding may occur due to possible widespread rainfall over a short duration. Shorelines and streams may become dangerous with faster flowing water and elevated levels.
This flood outlook remains in place until the end of Wednesday. Local residents should stay informed and prepare for challenging conditions as severe weather continues in the GTA.
