Legault Hands Over Torch; Fréchette Focuses on Living Costs

François Legault officially handed over the leadership of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) to Christine Fréchette, marking a significant moment in Québec politics. Fréchette is set to be sworn in as the new Premier on Wednesday. She intends to promptly address the pressing issue of living costs.

Leadership Transition

During a recent meeting, Legault expressed confidence in Fréchette’s abilities. He emphasized her dedication and competence, describing her as a “première de classe,” or top student. Legault, the founder of the CAQ, praised her for thriving in difficult circumstances, including her quick adaptation after the resignation of Energy and Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon.

Focus on Living Costs

Fréchette’s priority as Premier will be to tackle the rising cost of living. She plans to enhance public services and support those struggling with escalating expenses, particularly in light of recent global crises impacting prices. She met with Finance Minister Eric Girard to discuss implementing her proposed measures.

  • Détaxation of certain grocery products
  • Reduction of vehicle registration fees to offset fuel price hikes
  • Partial refund of the welcome tax for first-time homebuyers

While no specific measures have been announced yet, Fréchette is already assembling her cabinet and intends to include influential figures such as Bernard Drainville.

Cabinet Composition

The formation of her cabinet is crucial, as it must balance party supporters and those favoring Drainville, which is considered essential for party unity. Fréchette hinted that she may appoint a non-elected member to her cabinet, a rare occurrence in Québec politics.

Potential New Appointments

Guy Cormier, former CEO of Desjardins, has been rumored as a possible candidate for a cabinet position. However, sources indicate he has declined the offer, preferring to stay out of politics for the time being.

Fréchette acknowledged that ensuring a balanced representation within her cabinet is an intricate process. Nevertheless, she is committed to moving forward as her government prepares for a new parliamentary session beginning on May 5.

With Legault’s support and Fréchette’s proactive approach, the CAQ is poised for a new chapter focused on economic resilience and improved living standards for all Quebecers.
