Grace O’Malley-Kumar Honored with George Medal for Nottingham Heroism

On June 13, 2023, just after 04:00 BST, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and fellow student Mr. Webber were attacked while walking home from a night out. The incident occurred on Ilkeston Road.
Details of the Attack
During the attack, Mr. Webber was stabbed multiple times with a dagger. He sustained grave injuries and fell to the ground. Grace O’Malley-Kumar attempted to protect him, displaying remarkable courage. She bravely pushed the assailant, identified as 32-year-old Calocane, into the road. Unfortunately, the assault turned vicious, and Calocane directed his violence towards her.
Aftermath of the Attack
Despite her heroism, O’Malley-Kumar suffered severe injuries and collapsed. Mr. Webber, still on the ground, struggled to defend himself against Calocane. The assailant then calmly retreated from the scene.
Further Tragedy
Following this incident, Calocane went on to commit another crime. He fatally attacked Ian Coates, a 65-year-old school caretaker, who was nearby in his Vauxhall van.
Legal Proceedings
In January 2024, Calocane pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. Prosecutor Karim Khalil KC highlighted O’Malley-Kumar’s bravery in court, emphasizing her efforts to save her friend.
