Lufthansa Pilots Strike for Two Days, Cabin Crew to Join

Lufthansa pilots, along with crew from its subsidiary Eurowings, initiated a two-day strike on Monday morning. This action follows ongoing disputes over pay and working conditions with the pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC). As the pilots’ strike concludes, cabin crew from the UFO union has announced a subsequent work stoppage, potentially leading to four consecutive days of disruptions.

Lufthansa Faces Major Disruptions

On Monday alone, hundreds of Lufthansa flights were canceled, heavily impacting operations at key hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. This is the fourth strike the airline has faced in 2026. Flights to the Middle East will operate as usual, regardless of the strike, due to ongoing conflicts in Iran and the Gulf.

Impact on Flight Operations

  • The majority of Lufthansa flights within Europe were canceled at Frankfurt Airport.
  • Domestic German routes have been replaced with rail services.
  • Munich Airport displayed limited flight schedules, warning passengers of significant disruptions.

Eurowings pilots are only participating in the strike on Monday, while the strike for Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo pilots extends over two days. Not all pilots are members of VC, so participation rates may vary.

Middle Eastern Flights Exempt

The VC union confirmed that flights to certain Middle Eastern destinations would continue running. Specifically, Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine flights to countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are exempt from the strike. This decision addresses travel uncertainties caused by ongoing regional conflicts.

Statements from Lufthansa and Unions

  • Lufthansa stated it is working to minimize disruption, collaborating with partner airlines to operate as many flights as possible.
  • Passengers whose flights were canceled have the option to exchange their tickets for rail travel with Deutsche Bahn.

The strike centers on demands for better pay and improved pension plans. Lufthansa criticized the union for what it deemed unreasonable pay demands, stating that the request for double the existing pension scheme is not feasible.

Andreas Pinheiro, president of VC, expressed frustration over the employer’s lack of willingness to negotiate. He indicated that past efforts to avoid strikes had been disregarded by Lufthansa.

Upcoming Cabin Crew Strikes

In the latest developments, the UFO union announced that its cabin crew will strike starting midnight on Wednesday, continuing through Thursday. UFO’s chief negotiator, Harry Jaeger, emphasized that robust participation in the previous strike signals strong discontent among members. He warned that if Lufthansa does not respond appropriately, escalating actions will follow.

If these strike plans hold, Lufthansa will face disruptions from each of these unions for five consecutive workdays. This period of unrest highlights ongoing tensions within the airline regarding labor relations and employee compensation.
