Limerick Town Traffic Overhaul: Key Dates and Phases

Patricia Liddy, Director of Services for Transportation, Mobility and Public Realm, outlined a comprehensive schedule for the traffic overhaul. The project is divided into several stages to ensure effective implementation.

Initial Works and Contractor Appointment

Advance works began in early 2024 with the demolition of O’Riordan’s Bar and a nearby residential building at Colbert Terrace. The next significant step involves the construction of the Grove Crescent Car Park Link. A contractor has been selected for this phase, with construction expected to start soon. This part of the project is anticipated to last approximately four months.

Water Mains Replacement

Later this year, Uisce Eireann will initiate the replacement of water mains along Killarney Road, Main Street, and Colbert Terrace. These works are projected to take around three months and will be directly funded by Uisce Eireann.

Upcoming Phases

The subsequent phase will target improvements on the N21 Killarney Road. Following a tender process, work is anticipated to commence in the latter half of 2026. The council aims to complete these enhancements before the Ryder Cup, which will take place in Adare in September 2027.

Main Street and Colbert Terrace Developments

After the Ryder Cup, efforts will then shift to the N21 Main Street and Colbert Terrace. The local authority is collaborating with Malachy Walsh and Partners to conduct a value engineering exercise, ensuring the project stays within budget.

Traffic Calming Measures

In addition to these works, traffic calming proposals are set to be published in May to inform the public about planned measures. This notice will be issued under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994.
