Calgary Zoo Unveils Yellé, Its New Polar Bear, to the Public

The Calgary Zoo has introduced its new polar bear, Yellé, to the public. This marks an exciting moment for visitors as Yellé, a 20-year-old bear weighing 500 kilograms, emerges from a period of quarantine. Originally from Quebec, Yellé is now acclimating to his new home at The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

Gradual Introduction to Siku

Yellé’s integration into the zoo will be gradual, especially regarding his future encounters with Siku, the resident polar bear who weighs 420 kilograms. The two bears have been separated by visual barriers to help them adjust to each other’s presence.

  • Siku and Yellé are currently aware of each other through smell and sound.
  • They had their first visual contact recently, which marks a significant step in their introduction.

Paul Woerner, the zoo’s animal care manager, explained the care taken during this period. “We’re doing slow introductions to the point where they can be out on habitat together,” he stated.

Historical Context

Yellé’s arrival occurs nearly two years after the unfortunate passing of Baffin, another polar bear at the zoo. Baffin died from drowning following an injury caused by Siku during playtime. Woerner confirmed that no structural changes were necessary following this incident, emphasizing that it was an accident without human error.

About Yellé and Siku

Yellé, born in the Netherlands, is a lively addition to the zoo. Typically, polar bears in captivity live between 25 and 30 years. Observers note distinct differences between the two bears: Siku enjoys the comfort of his deep plunge pool, using it as a retreat, while Yellé prefers the outdoors.

“My first impression is he seems like a great old guy,” Woerner remarked, describing Yellé’s personality as extroverted compared to Siku’s more reserved nature.

Commitment to Conservation

Since 2023, the Calgary Zoo has served as an Arctic Ambassador Center alongside Polar Bears International. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the challenges polar bears face in the rapidly changing Arctic environment.

The introduction of Yellé into the Calgary Zoo is a significant step in their ongoing efforts to educate the public and promote conservation efforts for these magnificent creatures.
