Gjoa Haven Declares Emergency Due to Extended Power Outage

The Hamlet of Gjoa Haven has declared a local emergency following a prolonged power outage worsened by blizzard conditions. This outage began around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and temporarily restored the following morning before facing another disruption. Regulatory bodies, including Environment Canada, reported severe weather conditions hampering power restoration efforts.
Emergency Measures in Gjoa Haven
The community is currently grappling with extreme weather, as temperatures on Friday dropped to -26°C, accompanied by wind speeds reaching 51 km/h. In light of these circumstances, Gjoa Haven officials announced a state of emergency via social media on Thursday. They warned that even after the restoration of power, some homes may remain uninhabitable due to issues such as frozen water pipes.
Community Support and Resources
- Some buildings, including the local high school, have been designated as warming shelters.
- Residents who can accommodate those without power may receive up to $50 per person per night, including food expenses.
- The community is coordinating with Nunavut Emergency Management to aid displaced residents.
Gjoa Haven teacher Benjamin Sajo shared his experience during the outage. His home regained power briefly at midnight on Thursday, and he noted the stress felt by the community. Sajo described how residents used alternative methods to stay warm, including Coleman stoves, despite dangers such as fire hazards and carbon monoxide emissions.
Previous Challenges Compounding the Crisis
In addition to the power outage, Gjoa Haven has been under a boil water advisory since January 15 due to a broken water line. According to Sajo, the harsh winter conditions have been particularly difficult for the community. Some families were already living in cramped quarters before the outage, forcing them to employ dangerous heating methods indoors.
Awaiting Repairs and Restoration
As of Friday, the community remains without power while it awaits technicians from Taloyoak to assist with repairs. Attempts to bring in the technicians had been unsuccessful due to severe weather conditions affecting transportation. Local authorities have urged residents to check on elderly community members who may struggle to receive updates.
Despite these challenges, Sajo reflected positively on the community spirit during the crisis, stating, “The town came together in the end, and I’m happy my house now has power.” With continued efforts, Gjoa Haven aims to restore stability and safety to all its residents.
