Ayush Mhatre Discusses Meeting Dhoni, Bonding with Rohit Sharma

Ayush Mhatre, the captain of India’s U19 World Cup-winning team, recently shared insights into his journey with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and his interactions with cricket legends MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. His experiences reflect the challenges and triumphs encountered during his debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Journey to Chennai Super Kings

In his first season with CSK, Mhatre played 10 matches, scoring 314 runs with an average of 31.40 and a remarkable strike rate exceeding 180. Originally, he was an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. This occurred after he went unsold during the IPL auction in December 2024, which coincided with the ACC U19 Asia Cup.

Despite initial setbacks, Mhatre remained focused on his goals. While at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, he received a call from CSK, inviting him for a two-day camp. He described this experience as serendipitous, emphasizing that his perseverance paid off when he got the call to join the team.

First Encounter with MS Dhoni

Meeting MS Dhoni was a pivotal moment for Mhatre. He recalled Dhoni’s advice to balance aggression with control. “Play your game and go for your shots, but don’t try to hit every ball,” he recalled Dhoni advising him. This encouragement came right before his inclusion in a match against Lucknow Super Giants.

Interactions with Rohit Sharma

Mhatre also spoke fondly of his meeting with his idol, Rohit Sharma, affectionately known as ‘Hitman.’ Post-match, Sharma praised Mhatre’s batting skills and provided valuable tips, particularly on playing short balls. He reassured Mhatre that he could reach out anytime, a gesture that significantly eased the young player’s nerves.

Aspirations Beyond IPL

For Mhatre, wearing the Team India jersey during the U19 World Cup was a dream come true. He expressed that while he aims high, he doesn’t focus excessively on results. “My goal is to contribute to the team consistently,” he stated. Mhatre’s U19 World Cup performance reflected his determination; despite struggles earlier, he scored crucial half-centuries in key matches.
