Kings’ Laughton Thrives in L.A. After Maple Leafs Trade

Scott Laughton has been thriving with the Los Angeles Kings after his recent trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs. In just 16 games with the Kings, the 31-year-old center has tallied five goals and two assists. His transfer took place just ahead of the trade deadline in early March.
Kings Playoff Push
The Kings currently hold a record of 32 wins, 26 losses, and 19 overtime losses, accumulating 83 points in the standings. They are vying for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference, just one point behind the Nashville Predators. With five games remaining in the regular season, the Kings have one game in hand over Nashville.
Laughton’s New Experience
Reflecting on his transition, Laughton expressed his excitement about playing on the West Coast. He remarked on the differences he has experienced compared to his time in Toronto, particularly enjoying the lifestyle and opportunities available in Los Angeles. He mentioned, “My parents were down for the last week… it’s been amazing, honestly.”
Connection with Coaching Staff
Interim head coach D.J. Smith, who took charge on March 1, previously coached Laughton during his time with the Oshawa Generals from 2010 to 2013. This pre-existing relationship has eased Laughton’s transition to the Kings. “He’s given me a pretty good leash and a pretty good runway here,” said Laughton.
Reflection on the Maple Leafs
While Laughton enjoyed his time with the Maple Leafs, he admitted it was unsettling not knowing his future during the trade talks. He scored just two goals and two assists in 20 games for Toronto last season, and eight goals with four assists this season before the trade.
Upcoming Games and Future Prospects
The Kings are set to face the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers this week, before heading on the road for their final three games against the Seattle Kraken, Canucks, and Calgary Flames. Laughton, who is in the final year of a five-year, $15 million contract, will enter free agency this summer.
- Current Kings Record: 32-26-19 (83 points)

Laughton remains focused on the playoffs, stating, “I think my focus is on trying to get in the playoffs here and see where that goes.” His positive experiences in Los Angeles are a stark contrast to the challenges faced during his time with the Maple Leafs.
