Three YouTube Channels File Lawsuit Against Apple

Three prominent YouTube channels have initiated legal action against Apple, claiming the tech giant has breached the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, asserts that Apple unlawfully accessed and scraped a significant volume of copyrighted videos from YouTube to enhance its AI models.

YouTube Channels Involved in the Lawsuit

The channels bringing the lawsuit include:

  • h3h3Productions (including H3 Podcast and H3 Podcast Highlights)
  • MrShortGame Golf
  • Golfholics

The claim alleges that Apple “deliberately circumvented” YouTube’s protections against video scraping in order to profit from these actions. The complaint specifies that Apple’s research documents reveal the use of videos from the plaintiffs for AI training purposes.

Allegations Against Apple

The lawsuit states that Apple’s actions are not only unlawful but also represent a serious infringement on the rights of content creators. According to the plaintiffs, the company is exploiting the work of YouTube creators, feeding the rapidly growing generative AI industry without providing compensation.

Demands and Broader Context

The plaintiffs are requesting both an injunction and damages not only for themselves but on behalf of all parties similarly affected in the U.S. This legal move aligns with previous actions taken by these channels against other technology companies, including Meta, Nvidia, ByteDance, and Snap.

h3h3Productions, co-founded by Ethan and Hila Klein, has garnered millions of followers, while MrShortGame Golf and Golfholics have attracted hundreds of thousands. This lawsuit highlights the ongoing tensions between content creators and large tech companies over the use of digital content.
