Islamabad Waives Motorcycle Transfer Fees for One Month

In a significant move aimed at providing relief to the citizens of Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Capital Excise Department to waive motorcycle transfer fees for one month. This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to alleviate economic pressures on the public.

Details on the Fee Waiver

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced this decision through social media on April 7, 2026. He emphasized that under the Prime Minister’s public relief initiative, citizens can transfer their motorcycle ownership without incurring any fees at the Islamabad Excise Office.

Support for Increased Workload

To accommodate the expected increase in transactions, additional counters have been established at the Excise Office. Furthermore, the office will operate 24 hours a day, according to Irfan Memon, a department official.

Context of the Initiative

This decision comes at a challenging time for residents, as petrol prices have recently surged. The government raised petrol costs by Rs137 per litre, reaching a new high of Rs458.4. In response, PM Shehbaz has announced a subsequent reduction of Rs80 per litre in the petroleum levy.

The government is also implementing a subsidy for two-wheeler motorcycles. Under this scheme, owners can benefit from a Rs100 per litre subsidy, limited to 20 litres per month for three months.

Additional Economic Support Measures

  • Small farmers will receive Rs1,500 per acre as one-time support during the harvesting season.
  • Freight vehicles will obtain Rs100 per litre of diesel support.
  • Fixed monthly assistance for trucks: Rs70,000; large transport vehicles: Rs80,000; public service buses: Rs100,000.

These measures are part of a comprehensive effort to ensure the public can access necessary resources amid rising fuel costs. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb noted that the evolving energy landscape necessitates careful management and regular reviews of these policies.

Free Public Transport Initiative

In addition to waiving motorcycle transfer fees, Mohsin Naqvi announced that all public transport in Islamabad will be free for the next 30 days. This initiative, set to launch on Saturday, aims to ease financial burdens on citizens during difficult economic times. The estimated cost of the public transport scheme is Rs350 million, to be covered by the Ministry of Interior.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to providing timely support as citizens face escalating fuel prices and economic challenges.
