Montreal Metro Closures: STM Shuts Several Subway Entrances

Montreal’s public transportation authority, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), has announced several metro entrance closures. This measure aims to enhance public safety and manage issues related to homelessness, drug use, and incivility in the metro system.

Details of the Metro Closures

Recent closures affect three metro stations across various lines:

  • Belmont entrance at Square-Victoria Station (Orange Line)
  • Maisonneuve entrance at McGill Station (Green Line)
  • North entrance at De Castelnau Station (Blue Line)

The closures began early Tuesday morning for the first two locations, while the De Castelnau entrance has been shut since March 30. These entrances will remain closed for an “indefinite” period, according to STM spokeswoman Laurence Houde-Roy.

Objectives Behind the Closures

The STM’s decision prioritizes the security and comfort of its customers and employees. The areas targeted have seen various challenges, including cleanliness issues, excessive use, and antisocial behavior. By limiting access, the STM aims to focus its resources more effectively.

Houde-Roy stated that the spring months have historically seen increased incidents of undesirable behavior throughout the subway network. The STM intends to adopt a preventive approach to maintain a controlled environment.

Public Safety Concerns

A recent survey revealed that only 52% of public transit users currently feel safe in the metro and bus systems, down from 62% two years ago. This decline comes amid ongoing discussions about public safety amid complex social issues.

In February, a report by the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) mandated that STM increase measures to ensure staff do not work alone in high-risk stations. The STM has since reorganized efforts to enhance employee safety, with entrance closures intended to support this initiative.

Community Response

Following the initial closures, local community organizations expressed concern. They argue that such measures could exacerbate the challenges faced by the homeless population. Over the years, the interaction between the homeless community and regular passengers has raised significant issues for the STM.

To address these concerns, the STM has implemented a text messaging service for passengers to report incivility. There is also an increase in monitoring across numerous stations, reflecting a concerted effort to improve safety.

The STM continues to face complex challenges as it balances public safety with community needs. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on creating a secure environment for all users of the transportation network.
